SCROLL

Origin Story

Founded in 2017 in Portland, Maine (the OG Portland but we still <3 you Oregon), our footprint has expanded across the country and the world but our driving force has always stayed true: make work that stands out and that we stand behind, and make everyone we work with feel like they’re part of the fam.

  • WE FIND OUR OWN PATH

  • ✦

01 WE BOUNCED AROUND.

ROVE started with two friends, a camera, and a willingness to figure things out as we went. We bounced between ideas, mediums, cities, and whatever sounded interesting, following curiosity more than any master plan.

02THEN THINGS GOT WEIRD.

Somewhere along the way, filmmaking collided with design, illustration, animation, and everything in between. Our team grew, our toolbox expanded, and ROVE became less about what we made and more about finding the most interesting way to make it.

03NOW WE ROVE.

Today, we’re a remote-first studio, still rooted in Portland, Maine and connected just about everywhere else. Different disciplines, perspectives and creative obsessions all orbit the same idea: bring the right people and tools together, make something we’re proud of, and send it out into the world.

A Team in motiOn

Working across multiple time zones and disciplines.

Jay Brown

For over 15 years, Jay has been assembling teams and building things from scratch across film, design, and animation. Before co-founding ROVE, he worked as a director across music videos and other projects for artists and record labels including Atlantic Records, Stones Throw, and Mello Music Group. As co-founder and creative lead of ROVE, he’s since spent years collaborating with Spotify on everything from episodic series to global product launches, alongside creating an extensive body of work for Google across YouTube, Chrome, Gemini, Android, Google AI, and beyond. He’s also lead work for Disney, Toyota, Complex, NoBull, and a wide mix of brands, agencies, record labels, and networks. It all started in Maine, making skate videos with friends and learning how to tell stories through a camera. That same curiosity still drives the work today: finding good ideas, bringing together interesting people, and figuring out the best way to make something worth watching.

Gabe Bornstein

Gabe’s first job was as a grom at his local surf shop at 13, where he was paid in surfboard wax. After inheriting a love of film and image-making from his dad, he turned that early obsession into a career behind the camera, first as a cinematographer at VICE, working within Spike Jonze’s creative department and on VICE on HBO, and later directing and shooting films throughout the surf and outdoor worlds across Hawaii, Australia, and beyond. As a founding partner of ROVE, Gabe brings that production background to the bigger picture, helping guide the company, build client relationships, and stay closely involved with the work from first conversation through final delivery. Outside of ROVE, he serves on the board of More Women Surf+, a nonprofit focused on building a more inclusive community in board sports, and advises Blueprint Surf Company, a 3D-printed surfboard manufacturer. There’s still some surfboard wax involved, just slightly less than there used to be.

var(--variable-d7Njoxj0a)

Lacy Wittman

Lacy is a seasoned filmmaker and photographer with a career that’s taken her from indie features in Los Angeles to commercial shoots across the globe. A Montana native, she got her start in production after an early interview with Jane Fonda led to her first internship in Hollywood. Over the years, she’s worked on everything from studio films to viral, golden-era CollegeHumor videos, with career highlights that include filming in remote corners of the world including Sri Lanka, Lesotho, Zambia, Laos, Costa Rica and Peru. So, Lacy’s pretty much seen it all. She’s fetched coffee for Gerard Butler, survived overnight shoots in Chinatown, and once spent a month living among researchers in Kenya documenting wild elephants — just for fun. Now based in Minneapolis, she’s a proud mom, continuing to work across production, bringing a deep appreciation for storytelling, collaboration, and a sense of adventure to everything she does.

var(--variable-d7Njoxj0a)

Nicole Boliaux

Nicole brings a sharp editorial eye and a strong sense of story to her work, grounded in a background in photojournalism that has taken her from Denmark to Oklahoma to San Francisco. Along the way, she’s worked with NPR Music’s Tiny Desk and contributed to award-winning feature-length documentaries, building an approach to storytelling rooted in curiosity, craft, and finding the moments that make a story connect. At ROVE, that experience translates across both production and post, where she helps shape projects from early ideas through the final edit. Outside of work, Nicole is an avid pinball player, horror movie fan, and collector of 8-bit video games. She’s also collected 29 tattoos from around the world, and still has a trip to New Jersey’s LEGOLAND waiting on the bucket list.

var(--variable-d7Njoxj0a)

Mari Ray

A Cuban Puerto Rican designer and animator, Mari brings a love of exploration to both her life and her work. After earning her BFA in Motion Media Design from SCAD, she began her career in Atlanta, creating work for brands including Tapestry, Sysco, and John Deere. She later brought her skills to a healthcare and wellness design studio in Chicago, working with clients such as Takeda and Meridian before joining ROVE. At ROVE, Mari works across 2D design and animation, with an approach rooted in experimentation and a constant drive to find new ways of bringing ideas to life. That curiosity extends well beyond the studio: she’s an avid traveler and artist who can usually be found near the water, making something, or skateboarding around with her dog - and occasionally her cat - not far behind.

var(--variable-d7Njoxj0a)

Jared Flynn

Jared brings extensive experience across both 2D and 3D animation, with a career spanning broadcast, documentary, advertising, and design. He got his start in the broadcast world at an award-winning documentary studio, creating work for clients including National Geographic, NOVA, and The History Channel. From there, he went on to lead the animation capability at a large digital agency, working across brands and organizations including Welch’s and Harvard Business School. At ROVE, Jared plays a key role across our animated work, bringing both technical expertise and a deep understanding of motion, storytelling, and craft to projects from early development through final delivery. When he’s not pushing keyframes around, he can occasionally be found pursuing a slightly less conventional creative discipline: learning to play the theremin.

var(--variable-d7Njoxj0a)

Camille Vincent

Raised in Morocco, Camille followed her passion for animation to SCAD, where she earned her BFA and began building a career across design, illustration, and animation. Since then, she’s created work for clients including Apple, Meta, Air Canada, and Skittles, developing a style that’s playful, expressive, and grounded in a strong sense of craft. Now based in Nova Scotia, she brings that perspective to ROVE’s work across projects big and small. Outside the studio, Camille’s interests cover a lot of ground. Painting, cooking, gardening, D&D, climbing, and spending an arguably impressive amount of time appreciating moss in the Canadian woods. She’s equally enthusiastic about a good plum and almond lamb tajine, cacio e pepe, or raclette, and while she may describe herself as more of a climbing hobbyist than a send lord, her creative pursuits tend to be a little more ambitious.

var(--variable-d7Njoxj0a)

Vincent Zullo

Fueled by an early obsession with cartoons and over-the-top visual effects, Vinnie has built a career spanning motion design, animation, and visual storytelling across both 2D and 3D. He brings a strong technical foundation to the work, paired with an ability to take on complex creative challenges, experiment with new tools and techniques, and find smart solutions without losing sight of the original idea. That same curiosity carries into just about everything Vinnie does outside of ROVE. He’s made 3D shorts, developed interactive games, written folky instrumental music, and collected an ever-growing assortment of hobbies including guitar, gardening, and D&D. He also spends plenty of time with his leopard gecko, Lucille.
